Desperate for Wisdom

Earlier in the month, I wrote: Today, being the third of April reminds me how fast time moves along. Yesterday, it stormed with extremely loud thunder! I told my grandchildren to hurry into the house, so we didn’t get hit with lightning. The oldest got scared. So, I told them all, “I love storms!”

The night before, I finished reading the book of Job. God speaks of rain and lightning and wisdom in (Job 38:34-38, NASB). I’ve read it many times, but it’s a difficult passage of Scripture to understand. This past couple of weeks, it felt as if God removed a veil from my eyes, so I saw things I never saw before. Three of Job’s “comforters” talked about evil people, trying to get Job to repent. God allowed Job and his wife’s 10 children to die as part of Job’s testing.

Job said, in (Job 27:13-15, NASB), “This is the portion of a wicked person from God, And the inheritance which tyrants receive from the Almighty: Though his sons are many, they are destined for the sword; and his descendants will not be satisfied with bread. His survivors will be buried because of the plague, And their widows will not be able to weep.”

I gasped when I read this and told our Ladies’ Bible study how mean Job’s friends were to say this after he lost all his children. Today, I went back to the book of Job, to quote his friend and I couldn’t find it. Only the above Scripture, which Job spoke.

After using a search engine, I realized I totally got the speaker wrong. So, I had to correct my mistake at the next Ladies’ Bible study. It is so important to pray for God’s help when we read His Word. We need to be willing to admit when we were wrong when we’ve taught someone from God’s Word. In (James 3:1, NASB), we’re told, “Do not become teacher’s in large numbers, my brothers, since you know that we who are teachers will incur a stricter judgment.”

Years ago, a friend of mine who taught Ladies’ Bible study told us she prayed for wisdom. Following her example, I began praying for wisdom, too, since I took over leading the Bible study. Now, I’ve prayed it out of desperation because my role as wife and mother has expanded to grandmother, and as a pastor’s wife, I frequently run into perplexing situations. I praise God for the book of Proverbs. It leads the reader to Wisdom for all aspects of life.

May God bless you and guide you and protect you from evil, amen.
