On December 18, 2025, I woke up cheery, looking forward to time with a friend and my sister. My friend had to cancel, so I felt the disappointment and then moved on. Then, I got a text from another friend. A picture of a smiling Governor Kathy Hochul with the headline, “New York to Legalize Medically Assisted Suicide with Strict Criteria for Patients,” source, The Independent.
She makes it sound so reasonable, she said something like: Showing compassion for those who are suffering terribly in their last months of life, as God is compassionate, so should we be.
Is there not hospice with powerful pain-relieving medications? Does God not know of their predicament? He sees the whole picture. Does Kathy Hochul know more than God? What if the suffering patient has ignored God their whole life? Many people turn to God during trials. Perhaps He’s trying to get their attention, so they don’t suffer in the afterlife. We choose heaven or hell on this side of eternity according to the Bible. Can we trust doctors to be incorruptible, and not kill early to harvest organs? There are so many things to ponder.
Jesus suffered unbelievable torture and complete separation from God when He took on our sins. The only anguished cry Jesus uttered was, “My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?” (Mark 15:24, NASB).
We don’t know what it is to be totally forsaken by God. The creation speaks of God’s glory. We’re surrounded by His goodness when we go outside on a pleasant day. On a stormy day, perhaps we’re reminded of His power and fury at evil.
I’ve been reading in Jeremiah lately. The prophet cried out against the people of Israel, telling them to repent of throwing their children in the fire as a sacrifice to Molech, a false god. Jeremiah said that God never wanted such a thing to ever happen.
Jeremiah began warning them to repent or God will send the Babylonians to capture them as slaves, burn their cities, kill some by the sword. God said repent and turn to Me because your evil is awful, I’m paraphrasing. If not, I will also send famines and droughts and plagues.
They put Jeremiah in jail. False prophets rose up to contradict the Word of God. God said He’d forgive them and prosper them if they’d turn from their wicked ways.
I think a saving grace of Kathy Hochul’s, safeguarding the Jewish people, is the only thing that’s protected New York State from the wrath of God. Kathy Hochul has invited women from anti-abortion states to come to New York, promising to kill their pre-born son or daughter with New York State paying for the procedure.
God said if you’ll bless the Jewish people, and pray for the peace of Jerusalem, He will bless you. Yet, He came to give life and that abundantly, according to Jesus in John 10:10. The contrast, New York City put the largest lighted image in the world, of the god of death, Kala, from the land of India, on their tallest building, the Empire State Building.
And now, 24 years after 9/11, the city has elected a mayor that hates Jews and does not support our national Constitution. God’s ways are not our ways. He came to give us love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness and self-control as the fruits of the Spirit. Against such there is no law, (Galatians 5: 22-23, NKJV).
The Babylonians came to Israel, conquered, pillaged, burnt their cities, enslaved them for 70 years, as Jeremiah prophesied. I don’t even know how to pray for New York State, except God save us.
